Basic Description: The Fox Terrier is an old timer, originating in England and so named because he was used to bolt the fox. In early times hounds were used to pursue the fox, then the terriers were brought in to dig him out of his hiding place. The Fox Terrier has been bred to standard in England since 1876, and in America since 1885 when the American Fox Terrier club was formed. This dog comes in two coats, smooth and wire. Both are governed by the same standard, though the smooth coat is the older of the two. Regarding color, the white, which should predominate, is usually marked with patches of black or tan, sometimes both. The black, tan and white specimens are said to be "hound-marked." The dog must present a generally gay, lively and active appearance.
